Have you ever experienced that dreaded feeling you get when you realize your drain is clogged? Suddenly, your world practically comes to a halt because you can’t use your kitchen or bathroom sink. Are you aware, however, that plumbing experts believe you can do something about your drains to prevent clogs?
Here are some practical and easy steps you can take to keep your drains in good shape:
- Hair from the human body (or pets) is generally the primary culprit for clogs in the drain pipes Since people tend to do the majority of their hygienic care either in the shower or in front of the sink, hair easily finds its way into drains. You can avoid clogs by using an enzyme-based product designed for drain cleaning.
- Various types of food cling to pipes and, over time, creates significant blockages. The major offender is grease. Any form of grease combined with some warm water creates a liquid form that gets carried down the drain. During the journey, once warm water turns into cool water, the fat coagulates and attaches to the pipe’s surface. This problem is compounded by other food products like egg shells and grinds from coffee that can clog pipes.
To avoid kitchen sink clogs, do not put grease down the drain. Instead, collect it in a tin can. Throw the fat into the garbage once it hardens. Additionally, when using the garbage disposal, let enough water run while it’s “on” to help take the food all the way down the drain to the larger main water line.
